In The Purple Hairpin, he described the story as a small piece of his obsession. The Peony Pavilion was his way of saying he would live and die for that same feeling. Record of the Southern Bough shows a man dreaming of success in an ant-kingdom. That character wakes up to find his life of power was just an illusion. Record of Handan uses a story about a scholar to show that fame does not last. These stories help readers think about what is truly important.

Tang's ideas were very different from the strict rules of his time. He believed that human feelings and love were more important than cold logic.

He lived from 1550 to 1616, the same year the English writer William Shakespeare died. Tang is best known for transforming Chinese theater from simple entertainment into a medium for deep philosophical exploration. His writing often used dreams to bridge the gap between human desires and social reality. His works remain central to the kunqu opera tradition today. These plays continue to be performed in full or in adapted versions.

Tang’s professional life was defined by his service as a government official. He was born into a scholarly family in Linchuan, Jiangxi. He passed the provincial juren examination at age 21. However, he did not pass the highest imperial jinshi examination until he was 34. His career was shaped by his refusal to use political patronage. This choice meant he often held lower-level or ceremonial posts. For example, he served as a Taischang scholar in Nanjing. This role involved overseeing important rites and sacrificial ceremonies.

Despite his limited rank, Tang was a man of great integrity. He used his position to voice concerns about government corruption. He submitted memorials to the throne to expose the misuse of relief funds. These actions had consequences for his career. His criticisms of powerful officials led to his reassignment to Guangdong Province. There, he was tasked with overseeing prisoners in Xuwen County. In 1593, he was promoted to magistrate of Suichang County in Zhejiang Province. He was highly respected by the local people for his impartiality. Eventually, the frustrations of bureaucracy led him to retire in 1598. He returned to his hometown to focus entirely on literature.

Tang’s literary legacy is centered on a collection called the Four Dreams of Linchuan.

Because his study was named White Camellia Hall, they are also called the Four Dreams of the White Camellia Hall. The first play, The Purple Hairpin, began in 1573 and took fourteen years to finish. It was an adaptation of a story by the novelist Jiang Fang. His masterpiece is The Peony Pavilion, which celebrates personal desire and the human spirit. The other two plays are Record of Handan and Record of the Southern Bough. Each play explores a different stage of his relationship with "obsession."

These four plays function as a sequence of growing realization. In The Purple Hairpin, he called the story a "droplet" of his obsession. The Peony Pavilion was his declaration of living and dying for it. Record of the Southern Bough expressed the feeling of being "entangled" by obsession. Finally, Record of Handan was a retrospective sigh over a life spent on such things.

For instance, Record of Handan uses a character named Scholar Lu to critique political elites. Lu rises to power through bribery but dies of exhaustion, only to wake and find it was a brief moment. This serves as a satire on the transience of fame and the corruption of bureaucracy.

Tang’s writing style was deeply influenced by various philosophical traditions. His father was a Confucian scholar, but his grandfather followed Taoist teachings. Tang also studied under Luo Rufang, a teacher from the Taizhou School. This school was influenced by Chan Buddhism, which differed from the strict Confucian orthodoxy of the time. Tang’s work often rejected the Cheng–Zhu school's view that reason must balance emotion. Instead, he argued that love and human feeling were innate and vital. He believed drama should awaken these "humane feelings" in an audience.

His approach to storytelling was often described as "strange" or imaginative. He used dreams as a narrative device to merge personal needs with social tensions. Tang valued the freedom of a playwright to shape reality through creativity. This style was so influential that later writers formed the Linchuan school. His language was praised by contemporaries like Wang Jide as "graceful yet seductive." Even today, his work is accessible to global audiences. Complete English translations of his dramatic works were published in 2014 and 2018.
