They lived near the shoreline rather than farming. By the 16th century, the Safety Harbor culture was dominant. The Tocobaga people lived near modern-day Safety Harbor. 
United States control of Florida began in 1821. The military established Fort Brooke in January 1824. This fort sat at the mouth of the Hillsborough River. 

Economic prosperity arrived in the mid-1880s through several key developments. First, phosphate was discovered in the Bone Valley region. This mineral is vital for making fertilizers. 

Today, the economy is diverse and very strong. Tourism, health care, and finance are major drivers. The port at Tampa Bay is the largest in the state. It creates over $15 billion in economic impact. 

Tampa offers a rich cultural and educational landscape. The University of South Florida and University of Tampa are prominent institutions. Cultural sites include the Tampa Museum of Art and the Straz Center.
