He chose a town called Thonburi. Ayutthaya was too damaged to use right away. Thonburi was closer to the sea, which made it easier to defend. It was also a smaller town that his soldiers could protect easily. If an enemy attacked, his troops could quickly sail away to Chanthaburi. He was crowned King of Siam at Thonburi Palace on December 28, 1767.

Being a king was a very hard job for Taksin.

He ruled Siam from 1767 to 1782. His leadership was essential during a time of massive change and destruction. After the capital city of Ayutthaya fell, the country was split into several parts. Taksin worked to unify these territories and defend the land from foreign invasions. Because of his significant achievements, he was later honored with the title Maharat, which means "the Great."

Taksin was born on April 17, 1734, in the city of Ayutthaya. His family history reflected a mix of different cultures. His father, Yong Saetae, was of Teochew descent from the Guangdong province in China. His mother, Nokiang, had Mon and Tai ancestry. During his childhood, Taksin lived in a Buddhist monastery called Kosawat Temple. This education was very thorough. He became fluent in several languages, including Hokkien-Chinese, Filipino, and various Indian languages. These skills would later help him in his career as a leader.

Before he became king, Taksin held several important military and political roles. He served as a royal page and later became a governor. By the time of the Burmese attacks on Ayutthaya in 1765, he was known as Phraya Tak. During the Siege of Ayutthaya, he defended the capital against the invaders. However, the situation became very difficult for the Thai forces. In January 1767, three months before the city finally fell, Taksin led 500 followers away from the city. He moved toward the east coast to gather strength and prepare for a comeback.

Taksin's path to power involved strategic military victories.

He first captured the town of Chanthaburi in June 1767 through a surprise night attack. This gave him a secure base with plenty of resources. By November 1767, he had built a fleet of 100 ships and gathered 5,000 troops. He sailed up the Chao Phraya River and seized Thonburi. Shortly after, he fought the Battle of Pho Sam Ton near Ayutthaya. In this battle, he defeated the Burmese forces and killed their leader, General Suki. This victory allowed him to reclaim Ayutthaya within seven months of its destruction.

Choosing a new capital was one of Taksin's most important decisions.

He decided not to rebuild Ayutthaya because the city was too damaged. He also feared that the Burmese knew its weaknesses too well. Instead, he established Thonburi as the new capital. Thonburi was located closer to the sea, which made it easier to defend against land invasions. The town was also small enough that his soldiers could protect its fortifications easily. If the city were ever lost, his troops could quickly retreat by sea to Chanthaburi.

Taksin's reign was defined by both warfare and domestic rebuilding.

Much of his time was spent fighting to protect Siam from new Burmese invasions. He also worked to bring the northern Lanna kingdom and Laotian principalities under his control. However, he did not ignore the needs of his people during these wars. He focused on the economy, politics, and the general welfare of the country. He ordered the construction of new roads and the digging of canals. He also worked to restore temples and revive the arts, including painting, architecture, and drama.

Taksin's leadership also helped organize the country's knowledge and culture. He issued regulations to collect and arrange various texts. This was done to promote education and religious studies throughout the land. He worked alongside important figures like Thongduang and Bunma. Thongduang would eventually become the founder of the Chakri dynasty. Taksin's reign ended in 1782 following a coup d'état. After his death, his long-time friend took the throne and founded the Rattanakosin Kingdom. This dynasty has continued to rule Thailand since that time.
