In 1393, he gave the dynasty its name, Joseon. He moved the capital city to Hanseong, which is now Seoul. Taejo also wanted to be a good neighbor to other lands. He sent messengers to make peace with Ming China and Japan. He even received visitors from the Ryukyu Kingdom and Siam.
Life was not always peaceful for the new king. His many sons wanted to be the next ruler. This caused a big conflict called the First Strife of Princes in 1398. His fifth son, Yi Pang-won, led a revolt in the palace. This fight was very sad for the family. Taejo felt exhausted by the fighting between his children. Because of this, he decided to step down from the throne. He chose his second son, Yi Pang-gwa, to be the new king.
After he stopped being king, Taejo lived in a quiet villa. He stayed away from his sons for many years. He died on June 27, 1408, at the Changdeokgung palace. Many people today see him as a leader who saved his nation. He helped Korea build a strong sense of identity. He replaced a failing system with a new way to rule. His work helped the country find peace and grow its culture.
Taejo was the founder and first monarch of the Joseon dynasty in Korea.
Yi Songgye began his rise through military service in 1360. He proved to be a highly effective commander in several major conflicts. In 1361, he helped his forces recapture the capital city of Gaegyeong. He also defeated General Naghachu and successfully repelled Japanese pirate raids. These military successes earned him immense prestige among the people and officials. By the late 1370s, he was a central figure in Korean defense. His ability to protect the nation made him a candidate for political leadership.
A major turning point occurred in 1388 at Wihwa Island. The Goryeo court ordered Yi Songgye to lead an invasion of the Liaodong Peninsula. This move was intended to reclaim territory held by the Ming dynasty. Yi Songgye disagreed with this plan and chose to revolt instead. This event is known as the Wihwado Retreat. He led his army from the Amnok River back toward the capital. This decision allowed him to seize control of the government from the Goryeo royals. He eventually replaced the old rulers with leaders more loyal to his vision.
In 1392, Yi Songgye officially ascended the throne as King Taejo. He ended the Goryeo era and established the Joseon dynasty. In 1393, he gave his new dynasty the name Joseon. He also moved the national capital to Hanseong, which is modern-day Seoul. Taejo focused on continuity rather than radical change. He did not create many new institutions or perform massive purges. Instead, he kept many of the same ruling families from the previous era. This helped stabilize the new government during its early years.
Taejo was also a successful diplomat who improved Korea's foreign relations. He worked to build better ties with the Ming dynasty in China. He also re-established amicable connections with Japan through official embassies. His diplomacy reached even further across the sea. In the 1390s, he received envoys from the Ryūkyū Kingdom and Siam. These connections helped secure Korea's position in the early modern period. His efforts helped the nation focus on internal cultural growth.
However, the transition of power within his own family was violent. A conflict known as the First Strife of Princes occurred in 1398. This was a struggle between Taejo's sons over who should be the heir. His fifth son, Yi Pang-won, led a palace revolt to secure power. This event resulted in the deaths of several family members and key officials. The fighting left Taejo psychologically exhausted and deeply saddened. He chose to abdicate the throne in favor of his second son, Yi Pang-gwa. He then retired to the Hamhung Royal Villa.
After his abdication, Taejo lived a life of distance from his children. He remained at the villa for many years following his retirement. He eventually died on June 27, 1408, at the Changdeokgung palace. He was buried at Geonwolleung in the Donggureung Cluster. Historians view his legacy in different ways today. Some see him as a revolutionary who saved the nation from collapse. Others, particularly in North Korea, view him as a traitor to the Goryeo regime. Regardless, his founding of Joseon shaped Korean identity for centuries.
