Long ago, people built a city called Sybaris.

But the city had enemies. A nearby city called Kroton fought them. In 510 BC, Kroton won a big battle. They destroyed Sybaris. The people had to leave. Later, people tried to build new cities on the same spot. These cities were called Thurii and Copia. Over time, a river covered the ruins with dirt. People forgot the city was there. In 1932, workers found the ruins again. Today, you can still see parts of the old city. It is a very important place to study.
Sybaris was a very famous ancient Greek city. It was located on the coast of the Gulf of Taranto. This site is in the Calabria region of modern Italy.
Building a successful city takes many steps. First, people must find the right place to live. Around 720 BC, settlers from Greece arrived to start Sybaris. They came from places like Achaea and Troezen. These people wanted better farmland for their families. They built their homes near the water and the rivers.
History tells us many stories about the people of Sybaris. They were famous for loving luxury and big feasts. Some people were so wealthy that they became legendary. A man named Smindyrides was said to be incredibly rich. He even traveled on a ship with fifty oars.
However, the city faced many hard times and wars. A neighbor city called Kroton became a great enemy. In 510 BC, a big battle happened between them. The people of Kroton won the fight. They destroyed the city of Sybaris and forced people to leave.
Today, we can still learn from the ruins of Sybaris. For a long time, the city was buried under river dirt. This happened because the Crati river moved sediment over the site. In 1932, workers began to dig and find the ruins again.
Sybaris was a powerful ancient Greek city located in modern Calabria, Italy. It sat on the coast of the Gulf of Taranto. The city was built on a wide, fertile plain between two rivers. These rivers are now called the Crati and the Coscile.
The city was founded around 720 BC by settlers from Greece. These settlers came from Achaea and Troezen. They moved west because they lacked enough farmland in their mountainous homes. This was part of a large wave of Greek colonization. Achaean settlers also founded the nearby city of Kroton ten years later. Sybaris grew to be a dominant power in the region. It ruled over 25 cities and four different tribes. Some historians believe the population reached 300,000 people, though others suggest 100,000.
Sybaris was famous for its extreme luxury and indulgence. This lifestyle was so well-known that the word "sybarite" is still used today. It describes someone who loves opulence and outrageous pleasure. Ancient stories describe citizens who lived in incredible wealth. A man named Smindyrides was said to be a very famous, wealthy person. He reportedly traveled on a massive ship with fifty oars. The city was also quite advanced in its laws. They created a type of patent law in the 6th century BC. This law protected the unique recipes of bakers and chefs for one year.
Conflict eventually changed the fate of the city. In 510 or 509 BC, a leader named Telys took control of the government. He forced the 500 wealthiest citizens into exile. These citizens fled to the neighboring city of Kroton. Kroton refused to return them, which led to a massive war. The Sybarites marched with a huge army against Kroton. Despite their numbers, the Krotoniates won the battle. They destroyed Sybaris and forced the population to leave. Some survivors fled to other colonies like Laüs and Scidrus.
After the destruction, the history of the site became a cycle of rebuilding. The Sybarites tried to refound their city around 452 BC. However, they were driven off by Kroton again in 445 BC. Later, the city of Thurii was founded near the old site with help from Athens. Thurii was eventually destroyed in 193 BC. After that, the Romans built a city called Copia on the same grid. These layers of history were eventually buried by sediment from the Crati river. The different cities were lost to view for many centuries.
Archaeologists began to rediscover the ruins in 1932. The site is located southeast of Sibari in the Province of Cosenza. Today, the ruins are quite difficult to study. The city lies about 6 meters below the current surface. It is also below the groundwater level. Because of this, the site is often filled with water. In 2013, a flood covered the excavated area with silt. Even in 2023, workers must use powerful pumps to keep the water out.
Sybaris remains a vital subject for understanding ancient Mediterranean life. It shows how geography, like fertile rivers, can create immense wealth. It also demonstrates how political changes can lead to total collapse. The transition from Sybaris to Thurii to Copia shows how people reused ancient spaces. By studying these ruins, we see how Greek culture spread and changed. The site connects ideas of economics, law, and urban planning. It serves as a reminder of how even the greatest cities can be transformed by nature and war.
