Surprise can also lead to significant changes in how we view others. EVT proposes that positive violations can increase the attraction of the person causing the surprise. This can enhance their credibility, power, and persuasiveness. For example, if a person with low credibility makes a very persuasive argument, it can cause a positive surprise. This can change a listener's beliefs or emotions. Conversely, negative violations may decrease these same qualities. It is also important to note the role of familiarity. As people become accustomed to certain types of surprises, the intensity of the feeling decreases. If you expect a certain event, such as a jump scare in a movie, the violation of expectation is smaller. This makes the resulting surprise much less intense.
