Instead, it builds up in a large, growing pool. Pressure grows inside this pool over time. Eventually, the crust can no longer hold the pressure and it ruptures. This often happens at hotspots or subduction zones.

People have been studying these wonders for a long time. The term "supervolcano" was first used in 1949. It came from a scientific debate about the Three Sisters region in Oregon. In 1925, a man named Edwin T. Hodge suggested a huge volcano called Mount Multnomah existed there. Later research showed that Mount Multnomah never actually existed. Instead, the peaks we see today formed on their own. The name became very popular after a BBC show in 2000.

There are different types of supervolcanoes to know about. Some are massive explosive eruptions that form circular calderas. A caldera is a large hole formed when the ground collapses into an empty magma chamber. Other types are called large igneous provinces. Another massive event was the Fish Canyon eruption in Colorado. It occurred about 27.8 million years ago and released 5,000 cubic kilometers of ejecta. These numbers show the incredible scale of such geological events.

Supervolcanoes are connected to major moments in Earth's history. The Deccan Traps were formed by a hotspot about 66 million years ago. This occurred near the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. While an asteroid impact is the main cause of that extinction, volcanic activity may have added stress. Similarly, the Siberian Traps occurred around 250 million years ago. This coincided with the Permian–Triac extinction, the largest mass extinction in history. Studying these connections helps scientists understand how volcanic systems influence life on Earth.
