Sun's journey began in the village of Cuiheng in Guangdong province. He was born on November 12, 1866, to a family of modest means. His father worked as a tailor and a porter. To find better opportunities, Sun moved to the Kingdom of Hawaii. He lived with his elder brother, Sun Mei. In Hawaii, he attended the ʻIolani School. There, he studied English, science, and mathematics. He also studied American history and political ideas. He admired leaders like Abraham Lincoln. These lessons about self-rule and republicanism shaped his future goals for China.

After his time in Hawaii, Sun returned to China to pursue medicine. He studied at the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese. In 1892, he became one of only two students in his class to graduate. While training as a doctor, Sun became deeply involved in politics. He joined groups like the Furen Literary Society. These groups wanted to end the rule of the Manchu Qing dynasty. In 1894, Sun founded the Revive China Society. This was the first Chinese nationalist revolutionary society. It focused on bringing prosperity back to the nation through revolution.

Sun's revolutionary path was filled with danger and exile. In 1895, his group tried to launch the First Guangzhou Uprising. The plan was leaked, and many members were captured. This failure forced Sun to seek support from overseas. He traveled to the United Kingdom and Japan to raise funds. In 1896, he was even detained in London by the Chinese secret service. He later wrote a book called "Kidnapped in London" about this event. These years of traveling and hiding were difficult, but they helped him build a global network of support.
