The scale of the Olympics has changed significantly since the beginning. The inaugural modern games were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. At that time, there were only 42 events. Fewer than 250 male competitors participated from 14 different nations. In contrast, the 2021 Summer Olympics featured 339 events. There were 11,319 competitors representing 206 nations. Women first officially participated in the 1900 Paris Games. They competed in five sports, including golf and tennis. Since then, female participation has increased dramatically. The games have also seen changes in specific rules. For example, the marathon distance became standardized. It is now 42.195 kilometers, or 26 miles and 385 yards. This distance was chosen in 1908 to ensure the race finished in front of the British royal family.
