A subarctic climate is a type of weather pattern found on large landmasses. These areas are known for having very long and cold winters. They also experience short summers that can be warm or cool. This climate is often found at latitudes between 50°N and 70°N. It is usually located poleward of humid continental climates. These regions are important because they provide cold air for places further south in winter.
This climate works through extreme changes in temperature throughout the year. In winter, temperatures can drop very low. In summer, temperatures can rise above 10°C. For a place to be subarctic, at least one month must average 10°C or more. However, the coldest month must average below 0°C. Because winters last five to seven months, the ground freezes deep down. This creates permafrost, which is ground that stays frozen. 
Scientists use the Köppen climate classification to name these different types. They use letters like Dfc or Dfd to describe them. The first letter shows the climate is continental. The second letter tells us about the rain or snow patterns. For example, 's' means a dry summer and 'w' means a dry winter. The letter 'f' means there is no dry season at all. The last letter describes how cold the temperature gets. This helps experts understand exactly how a specific area behaves. 
Many different places around the world fit this description. Most subarctic areas are in the Northern Hemisphere. You can find them in much of Canada and Siberia. Notable cities include Yakutsk in Russia and Anchorage in Alaska. Some areas like the Kamchatka Peninsula are very wet and have large glaciers. In the Southern Hemisphere, these climates are very rare. They only appear in small spots like the Snowy Mountains in Australia.

Precipitation levels vary depending on the location. Most subarctic climates have low precipitation. This is because of low temperatures and low evapotranspiration. Evapototranspiration is the process of water moving from the ground and plants into the air. Away from coasts, most precipitation falls in summer. In coastal areas, the heaviest precipitation often occurs in autumn. Some high-elevation areas are exceptions. For example, Mount Washington receives 1,100 mm of rain-equivalent precipitation per year. The Kamchatka peninsula and Sakhalin island are also very wet.

Because of the cold, there is low plant diversity. Only hardy tree species can survive the long winters. Most trees are conifers, which are trees like pines. These climates connect to other global systems. Subarctic regions are source regions for cold air. This cold air affects temperate latitudes to the south during winter. To the north, the climate turns into tundra. Tundra is a climate that is not suitable for trees. To the south, it transitions into humid continental climates. In some areas, it may become a cold semi-arid climate. This happens in China and Mongolia where precipitation is very low.
