Long ago, people built a special water path in Germany. This was the Stecknitz Canal. It was a man-made way to move goods by boat. 
The canal helped move a very important item. This was salt from Lüneburg. People called salt "white gold." The canal also moved furs, wood, and grain. 
To move up and down hills, the canal used locks. A lock is a special chamber with gates. These gates help boats change height. The canal had seventeen wooden locks. The trip could take two weeks or more. Workers or animals had to pull the boats along a path. In the 1890s, a new, bigger canal was built. It used some of the same route. Today, one old lock called the Palmschleuse is still standing.
The Stecknitz Canal was a very special water path in northern Germany. It was an artificial waterway built to connect two different seas. By linking the Stecknitz and Delvenau rivers, it created a path between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. This was a huge deal for trade in the Middle Ages. Traveling by sea through the Øresund was often dangerous and slow. The canal provided a much safer way to move goods across the land. 
Moving boats through the canal was a slow and careful job. The canal had to cross a high point called a drainage divide. To manage the change in height, builders used seventeen wooden locks. A lock is a chamber with gates that helps a boat change its level. Some locks were flash locks that used a dam to let water rush past. Others were chamber locks, like the Palmschleuse in Lauenburg. 
People began planning this great project in 1390. The city of Lübeck and Eric IV of Saxe-Lauenburg agreed to work together. Construction started in 1391 and took seven years to finish. On 22 July 1398, the first thirty barges arrived in Lübeck. These boats were carrying salt from the town of Lüneburg. This salt was so valuable that people called it "white gold." 
During the 1400s, the canal was very busy with many shipments. In the fifteenth century, more than 3,000 shipments moved every year. These boats carried over 30,000 tons of salt annually. They also carried furs, timber, grain, and herring. Later, boats even moved coal, bricks, and gravel. By the 1700s, the number of shipments had dropped significantly. In 1789, there were only sixty-four shipments carrying about 680 tons of salt. 
This canal changed how people lived and worked for hundreds of years. The people who steered the boats were called Stecknitz bargees. They even had their own guild to celebrate their history. In the 1890s, the old canal was replaced by the larger Elbe–Lübeck Canal. This new waterway used some of the same path as the old one. Today, you can still visit the Palmschleuse lock in Lauenburg. It is kept as a special monument to show how people traveled long ago.

While the straight-line distance between Lauenburg and Lübeck is only 32 kilometers, the canal journey was much longer. The total length reached 70 kilometers because it followed the winding paths of the two rivers. To the north, the canal descended toward the Ziegelsee via eight locks. To the south, it descended through a staircase of nine locks into the Delvenau. This complex system made the journey slow, often lasting two weeks or more.
History shows that the canal was a massive cooperative project. In 1390, the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and Eric IV of Saxe-Lauenburg agreed to build it. Construction began in 1391 and lasted seven years. On 22 July 1398, the first thirty barges arrived in Lübeck. These barges carried salt from Lüneburg, which was often called "white gold." The canal quickly became more important than the old overland cart roads. It provided a reliable way to move goods even when sea routes were closed due to disputes. 
During its peak in the fifteenth century, the canal was incredibly busy. More than 3,000 shipments moved through the waterway every year. These shipments totaled more than 30,000 tons of salt annually. The canal also moved cereals, furs, herring, ash, and timber. Later, merchants added coal, peat, brick, limestone, and gravel to their cargo. However, trade volume declined significantly over the centuries. By the seventeenth century, shipments dropped to between 400 and 600 per year. By 1789, only sixty-four shipments moved about 680 tons of salt. 
The people who operated the canal had a unique way of life. They were known as Stecknitz bargees, or Stecknitzfahrer. These workers operated barges that were roughly 12 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. When traveling uphill, laborers or animals pulled the boats along a towpath on the banks. Because bargees could only own one barge each, they could not amass great wealth. This left the massive profits of the salt trade to the Lübeck merchants. Today, the Stecknitzfahrer guild still exists in Lübeck to celebrate this history. 
The Stecknitz Canal eventually gave way to newer technology. In the 1890s, the original waterway was replaced by the Elbe–Lübeck Canal. This newer canal was larger, straighter, and used parts of the old Stecknitz route. Although the original canal is no longer used for heavy trade, its legacy remains. The Palmschleuse lock in Lauenburg is preserved as an important historical monument. It stands as a reminder of the first European summit-level canal.
