Scientists believe the rover entered a low-power hibernation mode or suffered a mission clock fault. Because it was stuck on flat ground rather than a sun-facing slope, it could not keep its internal temperature stable. It is estimated that its temperature dropped to levels that damaged critical components. NASA continued trying to regain contact until May 24, 2011. On that day, the mission was officially declared complete, marking the end of a historic era of Martian exploration.
