Perceval spent many years studying and practicing the law. He went to Harrow School and then Trinity College in Cambridge. He became a barrister, which is a type of lawyer. He worked on the Midland circuit to build his career. In 1796, he became a King's Counsel. This was a special title for a lawyer. He also wrote pamphlets to share his ideas about the government. These writings helped people in politics notice him.

His journey into politics started in 1796. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Northampton. He stayed in this role for sixteen years. Perceval was a friend to a leader named William Pitt the Younger. He had many different jobs in the government. He served as Solicitor General and Attorney General. Later, he became the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

In 1809, Perceval became the Prime Minister. This is the highest job in the government. He led during a very difficult time. There were wars against Napoleon and many money problems. He also dealt with riots and the mental illness of King George III. Despite these hard jobs, he worked to keep the country moving. He even supported the plan to end the Atlantic slave trade.

He served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from October 1809 until May 1812. Perceval holds a unique place in British history. He is the only Prime Minister to have been assassinated. He was also the only person to reach that office after serving as a solicitor-general or attorney-general. His life was marked by rapid political rise and significant national crises.

Perceval was born in London in 1762. He was the seventh son of the 2nd Earl of Egmont.

Because he was a younger son, he did not expect to inherit great wealth. This meant he had to build his own career through hard work. He was educated at Harrow School and later at Trinity College, Cambridge. At Cambridge, he won a declamation prize for English. He graduated in 1782 and began studying law at Lincoln's Inn.

His legal career was essential to his survival and eventual success. He became a barrister in 1786 and practiced on the Midland circuit. In 1796, he reached the rank of King's Counsel. This title meant he was a senior and highly respected lawyer. By this time, he was earning about £1,000 a year. This income was necessary to support his growing family, which eventually included eleven children.

Perceval entered politics in 1796 as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Northampton. He was elected to replace his cousin, Charles Compton. He represented Northampton for sixteen years until his death. In politics, he was a follower of William Pitt the Younger. He often described himself as a "friend of Mr. Pitt" rather than a Tory. He supported the war against Napoleon and the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade. However, he opposed Catholic emancipation and the reform of Parliament.

His rise through the government happened very quickly. He served in several high-ranking roles during different ministries. He was the Solicitor General in 1801 and the Attorney General in 1802. Later, he became the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Leader of the House of Commons.

In 1809, he reached the highest position as Prime Minister. He led the country through many difficult periods, including economic depression and Luddite riots. He also managed the government during the mental illness of King George III.

One of his most famous legal achievements involved Princess Caroline. The Prince of Wales had ordered an investigation into her behavior. Perceval acted as her adviser and wrote a massive 156-page document called "The Book."

This document defended her against the accusations. Although the government eventually spent money to buy back copies of the book, it showed his skill as a legal writer. He later helped draft the documents that allowed her to return to court.

Perceval's life ended abruptly in the House of Commons. In May 1812, a merchant named John Bellingham entered the lobby. Bellingham had a grievance against the government and attacked Perceval.

This assassination remains a singular event in the history of British Prime Ministers. Bellingham was executed one week later. Perceval's legacy is preserved through memorials, including one in Westminster Abbey.
