Writing in this region grew from many different cultures living together. The Romans brought Latin culture to the area in the 3rd century BC. Later, the Muslim conquest in 711 CE brought new ideas. These ideas came from West Asia and North Africa. This created a rich mix of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian traditions. One early example is the Jarchas. These were short poems about the sadness of lost love. They were written in a local way of speaking called Mozarabic.

In the Middle Ages, two main ways of writing poems emerged. The first was called Mester de Juglaría. This was the style of the minstrels, or juglares. They sang poems with varying line lengths to all kinds of people. They used a tool called assonance instead of rhyme. The Cantar de Mio Cid is a famous epic from this time. It tells a real story about a man's battles and life. It does not use magic or monsters to tell its tale.

The second style was the Mester de Clerecía. This was the way of the learned poets, or clerics. Their poems were very formal and had carefully counted syllables. They often wrote about Christian legends or the lives of saints. Later, the 1600s brought the famous writer Miguel de Cervantes. He wrote a masterpiece called Don Quixote de la Mancha. This book helped create the way modern novels are written today. It used a style called the picaresque novel to build its story.

Spanish literature consists of the poetry, prose, and drama written in the Spanish language. While much of it originates in the Kingdom of Spain, it also includes the important branch of Spanish American literature. This branch developed its own unique characteristics during the early years of Spanish conquest in the Americas. The history of this writing is deeply connected to the many cultures that lived on the Iberian Peninsula. It is a tradition shaped by the intersection of Latin, Jewish, Arabic, and various Romance-based literary traditions.

The foundation of this literary history began with the Roman conquest in the 3rd century BCE. This occupation brought a highly developed Latin culture to the region. Even after Germanic tribes invaded in the 5th century CE, the written traditions remained largely Romanized. One vital figure from this era was Saint Isidore of Seville. He wrote the Etymologiae, which was an attempt to summarize all classical knowledge. His theological and scientific writings served as models for much of Western Europe during the Middle Ages.

In 711 CE, the Muslim conquest introduced new cultural influences from West Asia and North Africa. This created the Andalusi literary traditions. During this era of religious tolerance, thinkers like the Jewish theologian Maimonides and the Muslim polymath Averroes produced essential works. They wrote about science, philosophy, and mathematics. While these works were not the direct ancestors of Spanish literature, they created the intellectual environment necessary for it to grow. This period also produced the Jarchas, which were short poems written in a local dialect called Mozarabic. These poems were often written in Arabic script and expressed the anxieties of love.

Medieval Spanish poetry eventually split into two distinct styles of composition. The first was Mester de Juglaría, the style of the minstrels, or juglares. These poets used varying line lengths and assonance, which is the repetition of vowel sounds, instead of strict rhyme. They sang these stories to both nobles and peasants. A famous example is the Cantar de Mio Cid, an epic poem composed between 1140 and 1207. It is noted for its realism, as it describes real geography and lacks supernatural elements. The second style was Mester de Clerecía, the method of learned poets or clerics. This form was much more formal and used carefully counted syllables. These poets often focused on Christian legends or the lives of saints.

The Renaissance and Baroque eras brought significant shifts in literary form. During the 16th century, the first Spanish novels appeared, such as Lazarillo de Tormes. The 17th century, known as the Baroque era, featured the prose of Francisco de Quevedo and Baltasar Gracián. The most famous figure of this time was Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. His masterpiece, Don Quixote de la Mancha, is a founding classic of Western literature. Cervantes used the picaresque style to create a fictional narrative that became a template for future novelists.

As the centuries progressed, new movements like the Enlightenment and Romanticism emerged. The 18th-century Enlightenment featured the prose of Feijoo and the theater of Leandro Fernández de Moratín. In the 19th century, Romanticism brought the poetry of José de Espronceda. By the end of the 1800s, Realism and Naturalism became dominant. This era produced major novelists like Benito Pérez Galdós and Emilia Pardo Bazán. They focused on detailed depictions of life, often accompanied by the work of literary critics like Menéndez Pelayo.

The 20th century was a period of intense change and crisis. The loss of Spain's fleet in Cuba in 1898 caused a literary crisis. This led to the Generation of 1898, including writers like Miguel de Unamuno and Pío Baroja. By 1914, a new group of writers, led by José Ortega y Gasset, had established themselves. This era also saw the rise of Modernism, which included currents like Symbolism and Futurism. Later, the Spanish Civil War had a devastating impact on the writing community. Despite this, poets like Miguel Hernández emerged during these difficult times.

Following the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, which lasted from 1939 to 1955, Spanish literature entered a new phase. After Franco's death in 1975, the transition to democracy immediately impacted the literary field. A new generation of writers began to thrive. Authors such as Almudena Grandes, Javier Marías, and Rosa Montero helped shape the modern landscape. Today, Spanish literature remains a diverse field that continues to connect the historical traditions of the past with contemporary experimentation.
