It took place from 1936 to 1939. The war divided the nation into two opposing sides. One side was the Republicans, who supported the Second Spanish Republic. The other side was the Nationalists, a group of rebels. This war was not just about territory. It was a struggle over how society should work. Many people saw it as a fight between democracy and dictatorship. Others saw it as a clash between different religious and economic ideas.

The Republican side was made of many different groups. These included socialists, anarchists, communists, and separatists. They were loyal to the Popular Front government. The Soviet Union and Mexico provided them with support.

On the other side, the Nationalists formed a large alliance. They included fascist Falangists, monarchists, conservatives, and traditionalists. They received help from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Initially, the Nationalists were led by a military junta. On 1 October 1936, General Francisco Franco became their supreme leader. He established what he called the Spanish State.

To understand the war, we must look at the years before it began. In 1931, the Republicans won a major election.

This event ended the monarchy and created the Second Spanish Republic. King Alfonso XIII fled into exile. The new Republic tried to pass many reforms. They wanted to redistribute land to farmers. They also wanted to make the country more secular by removing Catholic influence from schools.

These changes created deep tension. Landowners and the Church often opposed the government's new rules.

Political instability grew throughout the early 1930s. In 1923, a military dictatorship under Miguel Primo de Rivera had previously ruled. After he resigned in 1930, the monarchy struggled to stay in power. By 1933, right-wing parties won the general elections. These groups, such as the CEDA, wanted to limit the Republic's power. They even looked to leaders like Benito Mussolini for inspiration.

This political division made the country very unstable. The left and the right were constantly clashing.

The war officially started after a failed coup in July 1936.

A group of generals tried to overthrow the Popular Front government. The coup did not succeed everywhere. This left Spain split into two military and political zones. In the Republican zone, social revolutions began to happen. Workers formed militias to fight the rebels. Meanwhile, the Nationalists gained strength through foreign military aid. They used new technology like aircraft and munitions provided by Italy and Germany.

The fighting followed a specific pattern of movement. The Nationalists advanced from the south and west. In 1937, they captured much of the northern coastline.

They also besieged the capital city, Madrid. The Republican position became very difficult by 1938. After Catalonia was captured, the Republicans were cut off from Barcelona. In March 1939, a military coup even happened within the Republican side. Colonel Segismundo Casado tried to seek peace, but Franco rejected his offers.

The Nationalists won the war in early 1939.

Mass executions also took place in areas held by the Republicans. Hundreds of thousands of people fled the country to find safety. Many went to refugee camps in southern France.

Franco remained the dictator of Spain until his death in November 1975.

The Spanish Civil War remains a significant part of modern history. It showed how global political tensions can trigger local conflicts. The war involved many international players and thousands of foreign volunteers. These volunteers joined the International Brigades to support the Republic. The conflict served as a preview for the larger wars that would soon cover Europe. It demonstrated the power of political ideology to divide a single nation.
