He created a famous rocket equation that engineers still use today. Later, Robert H. Goddard improved rockets using liquid fuel. He launched the first liquid-fueled rocket on March 16, 1926.

Real spaceflight began in the 1950s. The Soviet Union launched the first satellite, Sputnik, on October 4, 1957. The United States launched Explorer 1 on February 1, 1958. A few years later, Yuri Gagarin became the first person in orbit. The United States later had the Apollo program to reach the Moon. Apollo 11 was the first mission to land people on the Moon.

When a spacecraft wants to meet a space station, it uses a rendezvous. This is a set of moves to reach the same orbit. Once close, the craft will dock or berth with the station. Docking means two flying vehicles join together. Berthing is when an inactive vehicle is placed into a station.

We must also be careful about space debris. This is old junk or broken pieces in orbit. If too much debris hits other things, it causes the Kessler syndrome. This makes it harder to use space safely.

These sites are often far from people due to noise and safety. The rocket must reach a specific speed to achieve orbit. In an orbital mission, the spacecraft usually discards its first stage. Then, the second stage ignites to push the craft to higher speeds. Once at these speeds, the spacecraft falls around the Earth rather than back to the surface.

Rocket science relies on mathematical principles developed by early pioneers. In 1903, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky published work on using reaction devices for cosmic exploration. He developed the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation. This formula helps engineers calculate the change in a rocket's velocity. It considers the exhaust velocity and the change in the rocket's mass. Later, Robert H. Goddard improved efficiency by using liquid-fuel rockets. He applied a de Laval nozzle to his designs. On March 16, 1926, Goddard launched the first liquid-fueled rocket.

The modern era of spaceflight began in the 1950s. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, on October 4, 1957. For missions to the Moon, this helped simplify planning. To reach a space station, a craft must perform a space rendezvous. This is a set of orbital maneuvers to reach the same orbit. Scientists also study astrodynamics to improve space travel. Astrodynamics is the study of spacecraft trajectories. It looks at how gravity and propulsion affect a flight path. This field helps spacecraft arrive at a destination using minimal propellant. Some methods for moving in space do not use traditional rockets. These include solar sails and magnetic sails. Some missions even use a gravitational slingshot effect to gain speed. These advanced methods help us explore the solar system more efficiently.
