This town eventually evolved into Hamtun and then Hampton. Hamwic produced one of the best Saxon artefact collections in Europe. This settlement even gave its name to the county of Hampshire.

During the Middle Ages, Southampton grew into a leading trading port. It was a transit point between Winchester and Normandy. The town traded English cloth and wool for French wine.

Wealthy merchants built impressive structures like King John's House and Canute's Palace. In 1233, the Franciscan friary was founded. The friars even built a water supply system in 1290. They eventually granted the use of this water to the town in 1310. In 1447, King Henry VI granted a charter to the town. This made Southampton a county of its own. It even gained its own sheriff, a position it still holds today.

Security was a major concern for the medieval city. In 1338, the town was sacked by French, Genoese, and Monegasque ships. In response, King Edward III ordered the construction of massive walls.

These walls were completed by the 15th century. Today, about half of the original walls still stand. You can still see 13 of the original towers and six gates. One notable structure is God's House Tower. It was built in 1417 as England's first purpose-built artillery fortification. It has served many roles, including a gaol and a museum.
