Sophie Germain was a great thinker from France. 
At that time, women were often left out of science. Sophie used a fake name, Monsieur Le Blanc, to talk to experts. She did this because she feared people would laugh at her. One famous expert was Carl Friedrich Gauss. 
Sophie did amazing work on how surfaces vibrate. This is called elasticity theory. In 1816, she became the first woman to win a prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences. She also helped people study Fermat's Last Theorem. This is a very famous math puzzle. Her ideas helped other math experts for hundreds of years.

In those days, society did not think math was for women. Her parents even tried to stop her from studying. They would take away her warm clothes and her fire at night. Sophie would use candles and quilts to keep working. Later, she wanted to attend the École Polytechnique. However, women were not allowed to go there. She found a way to learn by reading lecture notes. She sent her work to experts using a fake name. She called herself Monsieur Le Blanc. 
Sophie used her secret name to talk to famous mathematicians. She wrote to Joseph Louis Lagrange and Adrien-Marie Legendre. She also wrote to the great mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss. In 1804, she sent Gauss work about Fermat's Last Theorem. This is a very famous math puzzle. Gauss was once worried about her during the Napoleonic wars. Sophie even asked a general to make sure he was safe. Eventually, she told Gauss her true identity. 
Sophie also studied how things vibrate and bend. This is called elasticity theory. She entered a contest held by the Paris Academy of Sciences. The goal was to explain the vibration of elastic surfaces. 
Even after her wins, Sophie faced many hard jobs. The Academy did not let women attend their meetings. She later made friends with Joseph Fourier to help her. She continued to work on number theory for many years. Her ideas about Fermat's Last Theorem helped others for centuries. Sophie died from breast cancer on June 27, 1831. Today, people honor her with a special prize. They also named a street and a school after her.

Beyond number theory, Germain became a pioneer in elasticity theory. This field studies how solid objects deform or vibrate under force. 
Her prize-winning work focused on the vibration of a plane lamina.
Germain's most significant impact remains her work on Fermat's Last Theorem. This famous problem involves finding integer solutions for specific equations. She outlined a strategy for a general proof and made substantial progress on special cases. Her approach provided a foundation that mathematicians used for hundreds of years. Even though she could not pursue a formal professional career due to her sex, her independent research changed mathematics forever. She died of breast cancer on June 27, 1831.
