They had to fight many different groups for land. They had wars with the Liao and the Jin. Eventually, the Mongols came from the north. A leader named Kublai Khan led the Mongol armies.

In 1279, the Battle of Yamen ended the Song dynasty. The Mongols then started the Yuan dynasty. This brought all of China under one rule again.

The dynasty began when Emperor Taizu took the throne from the Later Zhou dynasty. He conquered the Ten Kingdoms to end a period of great upheaval. This era is famous for massive economic growth and scientific progress. It fundamentally changed how Chinese society functioned. The Song era represents a peak in pre-modern Chinese civilization.

History divides the Song into two distinct stages. The first stage is the Northern Song, which lasted from 960 to 1127.

During this time, the capital was the northern city of Bianjing. The dynasty controlled most of modern-day East China. The second stage is the Southern Song, from 1127 to 1279.

This began after the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty took northern territories. The Song court moved south of the Yangtze River. They established a new capital at Lin'an, which is now Hangzhou.

Technological innovation drove much of the Song success. They were the first in world history to issue true paper money, or banknotes.

Scientists also recorded the first chemical formula for gunpowder. This led to weapons like fire arrows, bombs, and the fire lance. Navigators used a compass to discern true north for the first time.

Engineers also developed the pound lock to help boats move through canals. Improved astronomical clocks also appeared during this period. These advancements helped the empire manage its vast resources and trade.

Economics and population underwent a massive revolution. The Song population grew dramatically during the 10th and 11th centuries.

This was possible because of expanded rice cultivation. Farmers used early-ripening rice from South and Southeast Asia. This created huge food surpluses that supported more people. The Northern Song census recorded 20 million households. It is estimated that the Northern Song population reached 90 million people. By the Ming dynasty, the population reached 200 million.

Society became more complex and urbanized as the economy grew. The gross domestic product was three times larger than Europe's in the 12th century.

Large cities featured lively entertainment quarters and art markets. Knowledge spread quickly due to woodblock printing and movable type. Philosophers like Cheng Yi and Zhu Xi created Neo-Confucianism. This new philosophy blended Confucianism with Buddhist ideals. It also reorganized classic texts for study. This helped shape the intellectual life of the era.

Political power shifted during the Song period. The government used civil service examinations to select officials.

This system prioritized skill and merit over family names. It moved power from a military elite to a scholar-bureaucratic elite. However, internal politics often caused instability. Chancellors like Wang Anshi introduced the New Policies to fight corruption.

These reforms created intense rivalries between reformers and conservatives. Such political fighting often weakened the central government's ability to rule.

External conflicts eventually led to the dynasty's end. The Song faced constant pressure from northern groups like the Liao and Jin.

After the Jin dynasty was conquered by the Mongols, the Song faced a new threat. The Mongol leader Kublai Khan founded the Yuan dynasty in 1271. After twenty years of warfare, the Mongols defeated the Song. This happened at the Battle of Yamen in 1279. The victory allowed the Yuan dynasty to reunite China under one rule.
