Other factors might include habitat loss due to climate changes. The arrival of humans may have also impacted the populations of the prey Smilodon hunted.

For example, the term "saber-tooth" describes many different extinct animals that evolved long teeth. This is called convergent evolution, where unrelated animals develop similar tools for survival. Smilodon belongs to the tribe Smilodontini, also known as dirk-toothed cats. This distinguishes them from the Homotherini, which were scimitar-toothed cats with shorter, broader teeth.
