At first, scientists gave these fossils different names. They used the name Ramapithecus. Some thought these apes were ancestors of humans. But new finds changed that view. Researchers now see them as part of the Sivapithecus group. They also think these apes were separate from human ancestors. Sivapithecus was likely more close to the orangutan family. One species, Sivapithecus parvada, was much larger than the others. It lived about 10 million years ago.

They have narrow eyes and smooth nasal floors. For a long time, people thought they were human ancestors. Now, most researchers think they were separate from human ancestors. They might be related to the great ape Nakalipithecus nakayamai instead. This shows how much our ideas change with new fossils.
Sivapithecus is a genus of extinct apes that lived millions of years ago. 
Scientists use physical traits to understand how these apes lived and moved. Most Sivapithecus were roughly the same size as a modern orangutan. Their body proportions and wrist shapes tell a specific story. These features suggest they spent time both in trees and on the ground. Their teeth also reveal much about their daily lives. They possessed large canine teeth and heavy molars. These teeth were likely used to eat tough foods like seeds and savannah grasses.
Researchers generally recognize three distinct species within this genus. The first is Sivapithecus indicus, which lived between 12.5 and 10.5 million years ago. The second is Sivapithecus sivalensis, which lived from 9.5 to 8.5 million years ago. This species was about the size of a chimpanzee. It was likely arboreal, meaning it lived mostly in trees. The third species is Sivapithecus parvada, which was described in 1988. This species was significantly larger than the others. It lived approximately 10 million years ago.
The history of discovering Sivapithecus is full of changing scientific ideas. In the late 19th century, researchers found the first incomplete specimens in northern India. In 1932, a discovery in Nepal was named "Ramapithecus." G. Edward Lewis claimed this jaw was more human-like than other ape fossils. Because of this, many people thought Ramapithecus was a human ancestor. This belief was even revived in the 1960s. At that time, scientists thought human ancestors diverged from other apes 14 million years ago. 
New evidence eventually changed these theories. In 1975 and 1976, more complete Ramapithecus fossils were found. These fossils showed the animal was not actually human-like. Instead, they looked very much like Sivapithecus. Because of this, the older name, Sivapithecus, must take priority. Scientists also realized that Ramapithecus fossils might just be female Sivapithecus. Today, Ramapithecus is no longer considered a likely ancestor of humans. Biochemical studies also changed our view of how different ape groups split apart.
A major breakthrough occurred in 1982 when David Pilbeam published a description of a new find. This fossil came from the Potwar Plateau in Pakistan. It included a large part of the face and jaw, known as specimen GSP 15000.
Understanding Sivapithecus helps connect different branches of the primate family tree. While they look like orangutans in their jaw fossils, some scientists remain cautious. In 2003, researchers noted that dental and skeletal traits do not perfectly confirm this relationship. This shows that science is always evolving as new data arrives. Sivapithecus was likely already separate from the common ancestor of humans, chimpanzees, and gorillas. That common ancestor might instead be represented by the prehistoric ape Nakalipithecus nakayamai. Studying these connections helps us see the complex history of all great apes.
