Horse haylage is even drier, ranging from 60% to 70% dry matter. The choice of crop also matters; for example, ryegrass is a very popular choice for silage-making. This is because ryegrass species, such as Italian or Perennial ryegrass, have high sugar levels and respond well to nitrogen fertilizer.

While silage is essential for farming, it requires careful management to ensure safety and environmental health. The fermentation process releases a liquid called silo effluent, which is corrosive and can cause eutrophication in water sources. This occurs when high nutrient levels cause excessive algal blooms. There are also physical risks, such as the production of toxic "silo gas" containing nitric oxide. Furthermore, the fine dust created during the filling process can be explosive. Because of these factors, farmers must use specialized equipment, like bale grippers, to handle the material without puncturing the protective plastic.
