Siegfried is a grand music drama composed by Richard Wagner. It serves as the third part of his massive four-opera cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen, or The Ring of the Nibelung. This work is a vital piece of the larger epic narrative. It combines complex music with a dramatic story of heroes and magic. The opera is famous for its deep emotional layers and its use of specific musical themes.

The creation of this masterpiece was a long and winding process. Wagner drafted the libretto, which is the text for the opera, in late 1852. He originally called the project Jung-Siegfried. The musical composition began in 1856, but it was not finished until 1871. During this time, Wagner worked on two different versions of the score. He kept a complete draft in pencil and another version in ink. This ink version used up to three staves to help him organize the vocal lines and instrumentation. He even took breaks from Siegfried to compose other famous works like Tristan und Isolde. The very first complete performance of the entire Ring cycle took place at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on August 16, 1876.

The story relies heavily on the concept of leitmotifs. A leitmotif is a short musical phrase that represents a specific person, object, or idea. For example, the orchestra uses a specific theme in B-flat minor to represent the Nibelungs. These musical cues help the audience follow the complex connections between characters and events. The drama is divided into three distinct acts, each moving the hero closer to his destiny.

In Act I, the story focuses on the dwarf Mime and the young hero Siegfried. Mime is the brother of Alberich, who originally stole a powerful ring. Mime raises Siegfried as a foster child to help him kill the dragon Fafner. Mime hopes to use the dragon's death to reclaim the ring's treasure. However, Siegfried has already broken every sword Mime has tried to make. To succeed, Siegfried must reforge his mother's broken sword, Nothung. He achieves this by shredding the metal, melting it, and casting it anew.

Act II follows Siegfried as he journeys toward the dragon's cave. Before the battle, Siegfried hears a woodbird singing in the trees. He tries to mimic the bird with a reed pipe, but he fails. Instead, he plays a tune on his horn, known as Siegfried's Horn Call.

This music accidentally wakes the dragon, Fafner. After a fierce fight, Siegfried stabs the dragon in the heart with Nothung. When Siegfried tastes the dragon's hot blood, he gains a magical ability. He can now understand the language of the woodbird. The bird instructs him to take the ring and the magic helmet, the Tarnhelm, from the hoard.

In Act III, the drama reaches its peak near a rock surrounded by magic fire. The Wanderer, who is the god Wotan in disguise, appears to the earth goddess, Erda. He realizes that his own time is ending, but he hopes for a new beginning. Siegfried arrives and encounters the Wanderer. In a moment of strength, Siegfried breaks the Wanderer's spear, which is the symbol of his authority.

This act of defiance signals the end of the old era of the gods.

Siegfried then moves through the ring of fire to reach the rock. There, he finds a woman named Brünnhilde sleeping in heavy armor. This is the first woman Siegfried has ever seen. The sight of her causes him to feel love, which leads to a new emotion: fear. He wakes her with a kiss, ending her magical sleep. This moment connects the hero to the rest of the world and sets the stage for the final part of the cycle.
