Shreve used a modified riverboat named the Heliopolis to remove these obstructions. The town was named in his honor, and it was incorporated in 1839.

Shreveport played a significant role during the American Civil War. From 1863 to 1865, the city served as the capital of Louisiana. It succeeded Baton Rouge and Opelousas after they fell to Union control. The city functioned as a Confederate stronghold and hosted the headquarters for the Trans-Mississippi Department.

The war ended in this region later than in the east. The Trans-Mississippi was the last Confederate command to surrender on May 26, 1865. Following the surrender, a breakdown in military discipline led to rioting. Soldiers destroyed buildings containing service records, which made it hard for many to claim pensions later.

The city also faced a devastating health crisis in 1873. A yellow fever epidemic struck the population during an 80-day period. Approximately 759 citizens died quickly, and another 400 people eventually succumbed. In total, about 1,200 people died from the disease. This meant roughly one quarter of the entire population was lost.

This event remains one of the deadliest local epidemics in American history. Many victims were buried in a mass grave at Oakland Cemetery. Even religious leaders were not spared, as five Catholic priests and two sisters died while caring for the sick.

In the 20th century, the economy of Shreveport shifted through different industries. After oil was discovered in Louisiana, the city became a national center for the oil industry. Standard Oil of Louisiana and United Gas Corporation maintained headquarters here for many years.

Later, the city became famous for its music scene. The Louisiana Hayride was a weekly radio program broadcast from the Municipal Memorial Auditorium. Between 1948 and 1960, it helped launch the careers of famous musicians.

Most notably, Elvis Presley made his broadcasting debut at this venue.

Military and technological growth also shaped the area. In 1928, an Air Corps captain named Harold Ross Harris selected a site for a military airfield. This site was a cotton plantation near Bossier City.
