He was born in November 1835 in the Kushmurun fort area. His family held a very high status in society. He was a descendant of the famous Genghis Khan. His father was a respected leader in the region. This background helped Shoqan receive a great education. He was known as a father of modern Kazakh history.

Shoqan's learning journey began at a very young age. At six years old, he attended a small school called a maktab. There, he learned the Kazakh language using Arabic script. Later, he moved to a military academy in Omsk. He studied many subjects while living there. He read literature in both Russian and English. These studies prepared him for his many travels. He spent the late 1850s exploring Central Asia.

His adult life was filled with many different jobs. He combined military work with geographic exploration. In 1855, he went on a mission to Issyq Köl. Later, he traveled to the city of Kashgar. He was even elected to the Russian Geographical Society. During his travels, he met the famous writer Fyodor Dostoevsky. The two men shared a great love for learning. They wrote letters to each other with much respect.

Walikhanov's early life was shaped by a high-status family and a rigorous education. His father, Chingis, was a respected leader who held several senior roles in the Russian Empire. Shoqan began his schooling in 1842 at age six in a private school called a maktab. In this school, he learned the Kazakh language using the Arabic script. Later, his grandmother enrolled him in the Siberian Cadet Corps. In 1847, he entered the Omsk Military Academy. There, he studied Russian and English literature, which prepared him for his future intellectual life.

As an adult, Walikhanov combined military intelligence with geographic exploration. He conducted several important expeditions across Central Asia. His first major mission took place from 1855 to 1856 in the Issyq Köl region. In 1857, he traveled to St. Petersburg to report his findings. This led to his election to the Russian Geographical Society. He also traveled to Kashgar between 1858 and 1859. This journey provided a vital account of the Xinjiang region during a period of political change.

Walikhanov was a deeply intellectual man who connected with many famous thinkers. While living in Omsk, he met the renowned writer Fyodor Dostoevsky. The two men became close friends and shared a mutual admiration for each other's work. They continued to correspond through letters even when they were apart.

Walikhanov was also acquainted with other important figures, such as the geographer Peter Semenov Tian-Shansky. He was a strong supporter of Westernization and often discussed European civilization. He viewed these ideas as a new way of understanding life.

His academic work focused on preserving the culture and history of the Kazakh people. He wrote many articles and books about Central Asian history. One of his most significant achievements was collecting epic poetry. He recorded the first known variant of the Epic of Manas from a performer named Nazar Bolot uulu. He also compiled the poem "Kozy-Korpesh - Bayan-Sulu." In 1863, he studied Kazakh judicial practices. This research contributed to the 1864 Memorandum on Judicial Reform. His work helped bridge the gap between local traditions and modern systems.

Despite his many successes, Walikhanov faced significant health struggles. In the spring of 1861, he contracted tuberculosis. This serious illness forced him to leave the cultural center of St. Petersburg. He returned to the steppe region to try and recover his health. He even ran for a political position as a senior Sultan in 1862. However, Governor-General Alexander Duhamel refused to confirm him because of his poor health. He spent his final months in the village of Sultan Tezek, where he married Aisary.

Walikhanov died on April 10, 1865, at the age of 29. He was buried in the Kochen-Togan cemetery in the Almaty Province. His life was described by Nikolay Veselovsky as a "meteor flashing across the field of oriental studies." Even today, his legacy remains visible in Kazakhstan. A spring in the Altyn-Emel National Park is named the Shoqan Walikhanov spring in his honor. Local folk beliefs suggest the water from this spring has healing properties. His life remains a vital part of the history of Central Asia.
