Eiichi Shibusawa was a monumental figure in the history of modern Japan. He is often called the "Father of Japanese capitalism."
To modernize the economy, Shibusawa introduced several specific financial mechanisms. One key tool was the joint-stock corporation. This is a type of company where many different people own shares of the business. He also introduced double-entry accounting to help businesses track their finances more accurately. Furthermore, he promoted the use of modern note-issuing banks. These banks could create their own paper money to help the economy function smoothly.
Shibusawa's work began with the creation of the First National Bank, known in Japanese as Dai Ichi Kokuritsu Ginkō. He helped guide its establishment while he was still working for the Ministry of Finance. This was Japan's first modern bank based on joint-stock ownership. The bank had the special power to issue its own notes. Shibusawa used this bank as a foundation to launch hundreds of other enterprises. Many of these companies grew into major corporations that still exist today. They are currently listed as quoted companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
His personal journey started in a very different world. Shibusawa was born on March 16, 1840, in a farmhouse in Chiaraijima.
Shibusawa's influence reached far beyond just banking and finance. He was involved in over 500 different projects throughout his life. These included founding the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Tokyo Stock Exchange. He also helped establish the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. His work extended to social welfare and education as well. He supported about 600 projects related to schools and hospitals. He was especially interested in higher education for women and business studies. This led to the support of institutions like Hitotsubashi University and Tokyo Keizai University.
Despite his massive success, Shibusawa made a very specific choice regarding power. He founded hundreds of corporations but refused to keep a controlling stake in them. This decision prevented him from forming a "zaibatsu." A zaibatsu is a large group of companies controlled by a single family. Shibusawa did have a holding company called the Shibusawa Zaibatsu, but it only looked after his family estate. It did not control any of the companies he helped build. This helped ensure that his business empire remained decentralized.
Shibusawa's status in Japan was quite high due to his many achievements. Although he came from a humble farming background, he was granted the title of Viscount. This was a higher rank than the Baron title given to other industrial founders. He was also awarded the rank of Shōnii, which is usually reserved for high-ranking nobility.
Today, Shibusawa's legacy is visible in daily Japanese life. His face is featured on the 10,000 yen banknote.
