Shenyang is a major sub-provincial city located in China. It serves as the provincial capital of Liaoning province. The city is the most populous in the province, with 9,070,093 residents according to the 2020 census.

The name Shenyang has a specific meaning related to geography. It literally means "the yang side of the Shen River." This refers to the Hun River, which was formerly called the Shen River. The river flows along the southern side of the city. In Chinese naming traditions, the "yang" side refers to the sunny side. This is the north bank of a river or the south slope of a mountain. This is because these areas receive more direct sunlight.
Human history in this region stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological findings show people lived here 8,000 years ago. The Xinle culture was a Neolithic society from 6,800 to 7,200 years ago.
The Manchu period brought significant political changes to the city. In 1625, the Jurchen leader Nurhaci captured Shenyang from the Ming dynasty. He moved his administrative infrastructure to the city. The Manchu called the city "hoton." The name was later changed to Mukden or Shengjing in 1634. The name Shengjing means "to rise."
The early 20th century was a period of intense conflict and foreign influence. Russia and Japan both sought control over the region. In 1905, the Battle of Mukden occurred during the Russo-Japanese War. This battle involved more than 600,000 combatants. It was the largest modern-era battle in Asia before World War II.

After the Japanese surrender in 1945, the city changed hands again. Soviet troops occupied Manchuria and captured Shenyang in August 1945. They were later replaced by the Republic of China Army. During the Chinese Civil War, the city was a stronghold for the Kuomintang. However, the Communists captured the city in 1948 after the Liaoshen campaign.

Shenyang is also a major center for education and scientific research. It is recognized as a top 100 city globally for scientific output. This is tracked by the Nature Index. The city hosts several prestigious universities. These include Northeastern University and Liaoning University. These institutions are part of the Double First-Class Construction program. The city's infrastructure supports its large population and economic role. This includes major facilities like the Taoxian International Airport.
