Shaving is the way people remove hair from their bodies.

There are different ways to perform a shave. In wet shaving, people use water and soap to soften the hair.

Humans have been shaving for a very long time.

New inventions made shaving much easier for everyone. In 1895, King Camp Gillette invented the double-edged safety razor.

Shaving tools have changed to fit different needs. Some people use trimmers to cut long hair down to a short length.

Shaving is the process of removing hair by using a razor or other bladed implements. This action slices hair down to the level of the skin or slightly below.

There are two primary methods for shaving: wet shaving and dry shaving. Wet shaving, also called manual shaving, involves using water and a lubricating agent.

Manual shaving utilizes different types of tools. A straight razor has a single long blade.

Dry shaving is typically performed with an electric razor.

Human history shows a long evolution of shaving technology. Before modern razors, people used shells or sharp tools with water to remove hair. Around 3000 BC, copper tools allowed for the invention of copper razors. In ancient times, Alexander the Great promoted shaving beards for his soldiers to prevent enemies from grabbing them. In the 18th century, Sheffield, England, became a center for manufacturing straight razors. The invention of the safety razor changed the industry significantly. In 1876, the Kampfe brothers patented the Star safety razor. Later, in 1895, King Camp Gillette invented the double-edged safety razor. This invention used cheap, disposable blades that could be replaced easily.
Technological shifts in the 20th century made shaving much more accessible. During World War I, the U.S. military issued Gillette kits to servicemen. In 1918 alone, the company sold 3.5 million razors and 32 million blades. After the war, Gillette lowered the price of razors from $5 to $1 to increase popularity. The Second World War caused another massive surge in production. The U.S. military ordered Gillette to dedicate its entire production to the war effort. During that time, 12.5 million razors and 1.5 billion blades were provided to soldiers. By 1974, Bic introduced the first wholly disposable razor. By 1980, disposable razors accounted for more than 27 percent of worldwide unit sales.
Despite its benefits, shaving can cause various side effects. These include cuts, abrasions, and skin irritation.
