Before leading the big soccer group known as FIFA, he had many different jobs. He worked for a tourist board and a hockey group. He even helped organize the Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976. These jobs helped him learn how to manage large groups of people.

Blatter spent a long time working inside FIFA. He first worked as a technical director from 1975 to 1981. After that, he served as the general secretary for seventeen years. On June 8, 1998, he was elected as the eighth president of FIFA.

He took over the job from a man named João Havelange. Blatter was re-elected as president many times in 2002, 2007, 2011, and 2015. During his time in charge, the amount of money FIFA made grew a lot.

To build his power, he expanded the influence of African and Asian nations. He did this by increasing the number of participating teams in FIFA tournaments. This strategy grew the global reach of football. It also led to massive increases in revenue from the FIFA World Cup.

He stated he would not stand in the next election. However, he remained in office until a successor was elected. The Swiss Attorney General's office announced criminal proceedings against him in September 2015. They investigated him for criminal mismanagement and misappropriation.

Blatter faced several disciplinary actions from the FIFA Ethics Committee. In December 2015, he was ejected from office. He was initially banned from all FIFA activities for eight years. An appeals committee later reduced this ban to six years in 2016. In March 2021, he received a second ban of six years. This second ban followed a probe into massive bonus payments. He was also fined CHF 1,000,000. His current suspension from FIFA activities remains in place until 2027. Following his departure, Gianni Infantino was elected as the ninth president of FIFA in 2016.
