This word is a blend of the Greek "skepē," meaning covering, and the Neo-Latin "petalum." The term "calyx" was also used in botanical Latin. It was sometimes used interchangeably with the word for a cup or goblet.

Some plants show extreme examples of sepal development. In the genus Aristolochia, the calyx can be the primary whorl of the flower. These tiny structures help determine the direction and strength of sepal growth.
