These monkeys are gray.
Gray langurs are monkeys from India.
These monkeys live in many places. They live in forests and mountains. They even live in big cities.
They spend half their time on the ground. They spend the other half in trees. They use their long tails to help them.
Langurs like to eat plants. They eat leaves, fruit, and seeds. They also eat grass and roots.
They live in groups to stay safe. Mothers look after their small babies.
Gray langurs are a group of monkeys from India.

Most langurs are gray or yellowish. They have black faces and ears. Their tails are very long. A tail is often longer than their whole body. In the north, their tails loop toward their heads. In the south, the tails make a "U" or "S" shape. Males are always larger than females.
Langurs spend half their time on the ground. They spend the other half in trees. They can walk on four legs. They also jump and leap through the air.
These monkeys eat mostly plants. They like leaves and fruit. They also eat seeds, grass, and roots. Sometimes they eat insect larvae or spider webs.
Langurs live in social groups. Some groups have one male and many females. Other groups have many males. Females in a group are often related. They stay close and groom each other.
Gray langurs are a special group of monkeys from the Old World. Most of them live on the Indian subcontinent.

These monkeys have a very specific way of moving. They spend about half of their time on the ground. They spend the other half of their time in trees.
Scientists have spent a long time studying these monkeys. For a long time, people thought there was only one type called Semnopithecus entellus. However, things changed around the year 2001. Researchers began to recognize many more types of langurs. By 2005, some books listed seven different species. Now, there are eight recognized species in this group. This includes the Nepal gray langur and the Kashmir gray langur.
There are many interesting facts about how langurs look and act. Most langurs are gray or sometimes a bit yellowish. They almost always have black faces and black ears.
Langurs are very social animals that live in groups.
The genus *Semnopithecus* consists of a group of Old World monkeys known as gray langurs. These primates are native to the Indian subcontinent and have become very important to study due to their wide range. They are highly adaptable animals that live in many different environments. You can find them in thick tropical rainforests and dry deserts. They also live in temperate coniferous forests and high mountain habitats. Some populations even live in large urban areas, such as the city of Jodhpur, which has a population of up to one million people.
Gray langurs have very specific physical traits and movement patterns. Most species have gray or yellowish fur with distinct black faces and ears.
The science of how we classify these monkeys, known as taxonomy, has changed significantly over time. For a long time, scientists believed there was only one species called *Semnopithecus entellus*. Around 2001, researchers began to recognize more species within the genus. By 2005, some records listed seven different species. Today, there are eight recognized species. These include the Nepal gray langur, the Kashmir gray langur, and the Black-footed gray langur.
Genetic research has helped scientists understand how these species are related. Studies of mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA have shown how different groups cluster together. For example, research on the *T. pileatus* species group shows a mystery. Their mitochondrial DNA places them in *Semnopithecus*, but their Y chromosome data places them in *Trachypithecus*. This might happen because of hybridization, which is when two different species mate.
Gray langurs are primarily herbivores, meaning they eat mostly plants. They prefer eating leaves from trees and shrubs, but their diet is very diverse. They also eat fruits, seeds, grass, bamboo, and even coniferous needles or cones. They can even consume non-plant items like spider webs, termite mounds, and insect larvae.
Social life is very important for these monkeys, and they live in three main group types. There are one-male groups, which include one adult male and several females. There are also multiple-male groups and all-male groups. In one-male groups, the resident male is usually the only one who breeds. In multiple-male groups, the highest-ranking male fathers most of the offspring.
Raising young langurs involves specific stages of growth and care. A female's gestation period, or the time she is pregnant, lasts about 200 days. Most females give birth to a single infant during the night.
