Selim I was a powerful sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He ruled for eight years from 1512 to 1520.

Selim became sultan after a difficult struggle for power. He fought against his own father, Sultan Bayezid II. In 1512, Selim led an army of 30,000 men against his father's 40,000 men.
One of Selim's biggest challenges was the Safavid Empire. The Safavid leader was a man named Shah Ismail I.

Selim also fought to expand into the lands of the Mamluks. In 1516, his army met the Mamluk forces at Marj Dabiq.
These conquests changed how the world saw the Ottoman Empire. By taking these lands, Selim became the guardian of holy pilgrimage routes. These routes led to the important cities of Mecca and Medina.
Selim I was a sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1512 to 1520.

Selim's path to the throne involved a violent struggle for power. He was born in Amasya in 1470 to Sultan Bayezid II and Gülbahar Hatun. In 1512, Selim rebelled against his father to claim the sultanate.
One major challenge during Selim's reign was the Safavid Empire. The Safavid leader, Shah Ismail I, had converted Persia to Shia Islam.

Selim also targeted the Mamluk Sultanate to expand his reach. In 1516, the Ottoman and Mamluk armies met at the Battle of Marj Dabiq.
Between 1516 and 1517, Selim conquered the entire Mamluk Sultanate. This included Egypt, the Levant, Hejaz, and Tihamah. These conquests were significant because they brought the holy cities of Mecca and Medina under Ottoman control. Because of this, Selim is often remembered as the first legitimate Ottoman Caliph. A Caliph is a leader of the Muslim community. While some historians say the official transfer of this title was a later invention, the shift in power was very real. The empire became a central force in Middle Eastern politics.
Selim's reign also involved internal conflicts with religious groups. The Alevi population began an open rebellion during his rule. This unrest was supported by the Qizilbash of Safavid Iran. In response, the Ottoman army carried out harsh reprisals. In central Anatolian cities like Tokat and Sivas, Selim's forces executed many Shiites. This was one of the largest massacres in Ottoman history. These actions were part of his effort to maintain control and religious unity within his borders.
By the time of his death in 1520, the Ottoman Empire was a global power.
