Sega started a long time ago. In 1960, two men started a company called Nihon Goraku Bussan. The name "Sega" comes from the old name, Service Games. At first, they made machines for coin play. These were called slot machines. Later, they made games for arcades. One famous game was Periscope. It was a game about a submarine.

Sega also made consoles for the home. A console is a machine you plug into a TV. They made the Master System. In North America, they made the Genesis.

In 1982, they released Zaxxon, the first game with isometric graphics.

Following a downturn in arcades, executives Hayao Nakayama and David Rosen led a management buyout in 1984. This buyout was backed by CSK Corporation. Sega developed the SG-1000, its first home video game system. In 1985, they released the Mark III in Japan. In North America, this was rebranded as the Master System.

While it struggled against the Nintendo Entertainment System in the US, it was very successful in Europe. In Brazil, the Master System has been a major success through a partner called Tectoy. By 2016, it had sold 8 million units in Brazil alone.
