Saraswati is a central goddess in the Hindu tradition.

The nature of Saraswati has changed significantly over thousands of years. In the Vedic tradition, which lasted from 1500 to 500 BCE, she was a river goddess. Her identity was tied to the physical Saraswati River in northwestern India. As a river deity, she held the power to purify and to nurture fertility. Over time, her identity shifted from the water to the spoken word. In later Vedic literature, such as the Brahmanas, she merged with the goddess of speech named Vac. This evolution turned her from a force of nature into a goddess of intellectual order and culture.

Saraswati is often linked to the creator god, Brahma. Some traditions view her as his creation, while others see her as his consort. In this role, she represents his creative power, known as Shakti. This power gives reality a unique and human quality. In the Shaktism tradition, she is the creative aspect of the Supreme Goddess. She is also important in Vaishnava traditions. There, she serves as one of the consorts of the god Vishnu to assist in his divine functions. However, she is also worshipped as an independent, celibate goddess without a consort.
