In the city, you can ride on a tram. The tram service began trial runs in 2019. The current route ends at Jiangang Road Station. This is the southernmost railway station in China.

Sanya's history reaches back to the Qin dynasty, between 221 and 206 BCE. In ancient times, the area was known as Yazhou, which means "cliff state." Because it was so remote from political centers, people called it "the end of the sky and ocean." This extreme distance meant the city often served as a place of exile for officials. During the Tang dynasty, a Buddhist monk used the site as a staging post while traveling to Japan. The administrative history changed many times over the centuries. In 1912, Yazhou became Yaxian. After several mergers and separations involving nearby areas like Baoting and Lingshui, the area was upgraded. On 26 September 1987, the State Council approved its status as Sanya City.

The city is divided into four distinct districts: Jiyang, Tianya, Haitang, and Yazhou. Each district has a different population density and land area. As of 2020, the total population of Sanya was 1,031,396 inhabitants. The built-up or metro area, which includes the Haitang and Jiyang districts, held 801,020 people.

These districts support various economic activities, from tourism to military operations. For example, the Yulin Naval Base is a major military facility located here. It serves as a base for the People's Liberation Army Navy ballistic nuclear missile fleet on the South China Sea.

Tourism is a massive part of the local economy. Sanya hosts over 100 hotels, ranging from local resorts to international luxury brands.

The city also uses a tram system that began trial operations in 2019. The current tram route ends at Jiangang Road Station. This station is currently the southernmost railway station in China. These connections allow people to move easily between the airport, the city center, and other parts of the island.

Sanya is also becoming a center for specialized services like medical tourism. The Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, also called Boao Hope City, is a special zone in the area. This pilot project was approved by the State Council in 2013. It allows for the use of specially licensed drugs and medical technologies. These may include equipment or drugs approved outside of China but not yet approved within the country. In 2023, Lecheng served approximately 300,000 medical tourists. This development connects Sanya to the global field of medical research and international healthcare services.
