It all begins when eggs are laid in shallow gravel beds in rivers. The eggs hatch into tiny fish called alevin. These young fish soon become parr, which have stripes to help them hide. After a few years, they become silvery fish called smolts. To survive the move to the ocean, their bodies must change. Hormones like cortisol help their gills learn to handle salt.

Scientists have looked back in time to see where salmon came from. They found a fossil called Eosalmo driftwoodensis in British Columbia. This fossil shows that salmon existed at least 40 million years ago. This ancient fish lived before the Atlantic and Pacific groups split apart. DNA studies suggest the two groups truly separated 10 to 20 million years ago. This happened during a time called the Miocene. This was a long time before the big ice ages began.

There are many different types of salmon with unique traits.

The Chinook salmon is the largest of the Pacific species. It can grow to be very big and heavy. The Pink salmon is the smallest of the Pacific group. Sockeye salmon are often called red salmon in the United States. Atlantic salmon can live for about 13 years in the wild. Some salmon, like the landlocked ones, stay in fresh water their whole lives.

Because they are so popular, people also farm them. Norway is the largest producer of farmed salmon in the world. Chile is the second largest producer. Some salmon have even moved to new homes like New Zealand or South America. These fish continue to travel great distances to find their way home.

Once in the ocean, salmon spend one to five years maturing. They eventually return to their freshwater birthplace to spawn. This return journey is often guided by olfactory memory.
