Ruth's career at Mattel ended following investigations by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The agency investigated the company for falsifying financial documents. In 1975, the Handlers were forced to resign from the company. Ruth later pleaded no contest to charges of fraud and false reporting. She was fined $57,000 and sentenced to 2,500 hours of community service. She attributed these difficulties to being unfocused during her illness. Ruth Handler died on April 27, 2002, at the age of 85, due to complications from colon cancer. Her legacy continues through her inventions and her portrayal in the 2023 film, *Barbie*.
