In 1917, Russia went through big changes. This was the Russian Revolution. 

A group called the Bolsheviks wanted change. Their leader was Vladimir Lenin. 
A civil war soon broke out. It was a fight between the Red Army and the White Army. The Red Army was led by Leon Trotsky. The war lasted until 1922. After the war, the Soviet Union was formed. It brought many nations under one flag. This new state lasted for sixty years.
The Russian Revolution was a time of huge change in Russia. It began in 1917 and changed how the country was run. 

Many hard things led to the revolution. Russia was fighting in World War I. The war caused many problems for the people. There were not enough supplies like bread and grain. This made people very hungry and unhappy. In the cities, prices for food went up a lot. This happened because the government printed too much money. Workers also faced long hours and dangerous jobs in factories. These problems made people want to change their leaders.
In early 1917, the first big change happened. This was called the February Revolution. 
One group, the Bolsheviks, became very popular. They were a far-left party led by Vladimir Lenin. 

After the revolution, a civil war broke out. It was a fight between different sides. The Reds were the Bolsheviks. The Whites were their enemies, including many different groups. 

The Russian Revolution was a period of massive political and social transformation. It began in 1917 and changed the course of the 20th century. 
Several deep-seated problems created the conditions for unrest. Russia was struggling during World War I. The German Empire inflicted many defeats on the Russian front. 
In the cities, workers faced terrible conditions. Many worked 11 to 12 hours every day. They lived in overcrowded housing with poor sanitation. Workers also dealt with low wages and dangerous factory jobs. In the countryside, peasants wanted land reform. They believed land should belong to those who work it. 
The first major stage was the February Revolution in 1917. 

Local workers and soldiers formed councils called Soviets. 

The second stage was the October Revolution. This was an armed insurrection by the Bolsheviks in Petrograd. They successfully overthrew the Provisional Government. The Bolsheviks established the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, or RSFSR. This was the world's first socialist state. They aimed to practice soviet democracy on a large scale. To focus on internal matters, they signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany in March 1918. This ended Russia's participation in World War I.
Following the revolution, a violent civil war erupted. The conflict pitted the "Reds," who were the Bolsheviks, against the "Whites." 
The revolutionary period concluded around 1922. This happened after the White Army and separatist factions were defeated.
