There are two types of transcription. Phonemic transcription uses sounds that carry meaning. Phonetic transcription is even more precise. It tries to record every tiny sound. Most systems find a middle ground. They want to be easy to read. They also want to be helpful for speech. For example, the Hepburn system helps English speakers read Japanese.

Most modern romanization systems are actually a compromise between these two extremes. Pure transcription is often impossible because source languages contain sounds that the target language lacks. Designers must balance accuracy with legibility. A system that is too precise might be impossible to read or type easily. For instance, the Japanese martial art 柔術 can be romanized as zyûzyutu using Nihon-shiki. An English speaker would find the Hepburn version, jūjutsu, much easier to pronounce.
Different systems are designed for specific purposes and audiences. Some are tailored to a single language, while others are general systems for many languages. A language-specific system might preserve unique pronunciation features. In contrast, a general system might be better for cataloging international texts. Characteristics like simplicity and reversibility are also important. Reversibility refers to whether the original text can be restored from the romanized version. Since the Latin alphabet is smaller than many other systems, creators often use digraphs or diacritics to represent extra sounds.
History shows a long timeline of developing these standards for different scripts. For the Arabic script, which is used for languages like Persian and Urdu, many standards exist. The International Convention of Orientalist Scholars adopted an Arabic system in 1936. Later, the British Standards Institution developed BS 4280 in 1968. In the 1990s, Tim Buckwalter developed a transliteration system at Xerox that avoids unusual diacritics. For Indic scripts, the ISO 15919 standard was codified in 2001 to map many sounds using diacritics.
Romanization also plays a role in solving social and linguistic challenges. In South Asia, the Hindustani language faces a divide between the Devanagari and Nastaʿlīq scripts. This "digraphia" can make it difficult for people using different scripts to collaborate. To address this, the Hamari Boli Initiative began in 2011. This project uses romanization to help modernize the language and improve communication. By creating shared ways to write, romanization helps connect people across different writing traditions.
