As people lived in new places, they met new neighbors. The language picked up words from Greek and Persian. It also took parts from Armenian. Some groups now use mixed languages. These are called Para-Romani varieties. They use Romani words with local ones. This helps them stay connected to their group.

Some dialects are in danger of being lost. Experts are working to write them down. This helps save the history of the language. Romani is a way to share a rich culture. It connects people to their roots and to each other.

People who speak it often call it "the Romani language." They might also say they speak "in a Rom way." This name comes from the word "Rom," which can mean a member of the group. Today, the language is divided into many different forms called dialects. The largest ones include Vlax Romani with 500,000 speakers. Balkan Romani has 600,000 speakers, and Sinte Romani has 300,000.

As the Romani people moved, their language changed in interesting ways. It grew by picking up words and rules from the places they visited. For example, Medieval Greek had a big influence on Early Romani. This helped change how the language uses words and how sentences are built. The language also took some parts from Persian and Armenian. Some groups now speak what linguists call Para-Romani varieties. These are mixed languages used in places like Britain or Spain. They use local words but keep Romani words to stay connected to their culture.

Scientists have worked hard to find where Romani began. In 1763, a pastor named István Vályi noticed it sounded like languages from India. Later, a man named Johann Christian Christoph Rüdiger suggested it came from Sanskrit. By the mid-1800s, George Borrow stated it definitely had origins in India.

Other experts, like August Pott and Franz Miklosich, also studied its history. In 1927, Ralph Turner helped connect Romani to the history of Indian languages. These studies show how the language traveled across huge distances.

Much of what we know comes from comparing different versions of the language. By looking at how words change, experts can guess when people moved. For instance, Romani has only two genders: masculine and feminine. Many older Indian languages had three genders, including a neuter one. This suggests the ancestors of the Romani people left India during a specific time. They likely stayed in places like the Byzantine Empire for a long time.

The Mongol invasion in the 13th century also helped push people westward toward Europe.

Today, Romani is a living link to a very long history. It is spoken in 42 different European countries. Because the groups are so spread out, the dialects are very different. Some of these dialects are in danger of being lost forever. To help, researchers at Manchester University are working to write them down.

Romani is an Indo-Aryan macrolanguage spoken by the Romani people. It is a unique language because it is one of the only Indo-Aryan languages spoken entirely outside of the Indian subcontinent.

This language serves as a vital connection to the identity and history of the Romani people. Many speakers refer to the language as "the Romani language" or say they speak "in a Rom way." The term "Rom" can mean a member of the Romani group or a husband. This root is also where the English term "Roma" comes from. Today, the language is divided into many different dialects that vary based on geography and history.

Linguists categorize Romani as an Indo-Aryan language that is part of the Balkan sprachbund. A sprachbund is a group of languages that become similar because they are spoken in the same area. Romani has been shaped by many different cultures through contact. It shows significant influence from Persian, Armenian, and Byzantine Greek. South Slavic languages have also influenced its grammar and phonology, which is the study of speech sounds. Some experts classify Romani within the Central Zone or Northwestern Zone of Indo-Aryan languages. Others believe it should be treated as its own unique group entirely.

The various dialects of Romani are quite distinct. The largest dialects include Balkan Romani, which has about 600,000 speakers, and Vlax Romani, with 500,000 speakers. Sinte Romani is another major dialect with 300,000 speakers. In some regions, such as Britain, Scandinavia, or the Iberian Peninsula, communities use Para-Romani varieties. These are not true dialects of Romani but are mixed languages. They use the local majority language but keep Romani-derived vocabulary as an in-group code. Examples include Angloromani in Britain, Caló in Spain, and Rommani in Scandinavia. The differences between these varieties can be as large as the differences between Slavic languages.

The history of Romani is discovered through comparative linguistics. This is the study of how languages relate to one another. In 1763, István Vályi noticed similarities between Romani and Indo-Aryan languages. He compared a Romani dialect to the language spoken by students from Sri Lanka. Later, Johann Christian Christoph Rüdiger suggested in 1782 that Romani descended from Sanskrit. In the mid-nineteenth century, George Borrow stated that the language definitely had Indian origins. By 1927, Ralph Turner provided the research needed to integrate Romani into the history of Indian languages.

Scholars use specific grammatical clues to trace the movement of the Romani people. For example, Romani has only two genders: masculine and feminine. Many Middle Indo-Aryan languages had three genders, including a neuter gender. The loss of the neuter gender suggests the ancestors of the Romani left India during the transition to New Indo-Aryan. This transition likely happened around the tenth century. The language also shows signs of a long stay in the Byzantine Empire between the 10th and 13th centuries. This period is known as Early Romani or Late Proto-Romani.

The migration of the Romani people was influenced by major historical events. The Mongol invasion of Europe in the thirteenth century helped trigger a westward migration. As Romani groups spread across different continents, they became separated by great distances. This separation led to the development of local community distinctions and different dialects. Some researchers also study the relationship between Romani and Domari. While they share many grammatical features, most modern research suggests they are two separate languages. This implies that the Dom and the Rom likely descended from different migration waves out of India.

Today, Romani is spoken in 42 different European countries. Because the groups are so scattered, many dialects are currently at risk. Some varieties are considered to be on the brink of extinction. To help preserve this heritage, a project at Manchester University is transcribing various Romani dialects for the first time. This work is essential for understanding the complex history and the many voices of the Romani people.
