Imagine looking at a giant clock or an old stone building. You might see strange letters instead of normal numbers. 

This system works by using seven specific letters from the Latin alphabet. Each letter has its own fixed value. The letter I means one, while V means five. The letters X, L, C, D, and M stand for ten, fifty, one hundred, five hundred, and one thousand. 

History shows us that these numbers were not always written the same way. In ancient Rome, the way people wrote them could change quite a lot. During the medieval times, the system became even more chaotic.
Roman numerals have some big differences from the numbers we use every day. One major difference is that they do not have a symbol for zero. Our modern system uses zero to hold a place, but Roman numerals do not. They also use a different way to show fractions or parts of a whole. Instead of using tens, they used a system based on twelfths. They used small dots to show these parts. 
We can still find Roman numerals in our world if we look closely. You might see them on the face of Big Ben in London.

For larger values, L represents 50, C represents 100, D represents 500, and M represents 1,000. To build a number, you typically append these symbols from the highest value to the lowest. For example, the number 246 is written as CCXLVI. 
This system also uses a method called subtractive notation to keep numbers concise. When a smaller symbol appears before a larger one, it implies subtraction. For instance, IV represents 4 because you subtract 1 from 5. Similarly, IX represents 9. In standard modern use, subtractive notation is applied to 4, 9, 40, 90, 400, and 900. Other forms, such as writing 4 as IIII, were common in the past and still appear on some modern clock faces. 
History shows that Roman numeral usage was often inconsistent. In ancient Rome, notation varied, and it became even more chaotic during the medieval period. There was never a single, universally accepted official standard. Some writers preferred a "classical" style, while others sought more flexibility. This lack of uniformity meant that different documents or inscriptions could use different rules. For example, the gates of the Colosseum used different subtractive rules for different numbers.
One major difference between Roman and Arabic numerals is the concept of zero. Roman numerals are non-positional, meaning they do not use a zero as a place-holder. In our modern system, a zero allows a digit to represent different powers of ten. The Romans had no specific symbol for the number zero itself. They used the Latin word "nulla," meaning none, to represent the concept. This word was used in manuscripts as early as 525 AD. 
The system also handled fractions differently through a duodecimal method. Instead of using a base of ten, the Romans used a base of twelve. This was because twelve is easier to divide into common parts like halves and thirds. They used small dots to represent twelfths. One dot represented an "ounce," which is the source of the English word. Five dots arranged in a pattern called a quincunx represented five twelfths. 
Despite the rise of Arabic numerals from the 14th century, Roman numerals remain significant. They are still used for decorative or formal purposes today. You can see them on the face of Big Ben or on the year numbers of monuments. For example, the year 1776 is written as MDCCLXXVI on the book held by the Statue of Liberty. They also appear on movie title screens to show copyright dates. Even in legal contexts, such as U.S. copyright law before 1988, these numerals held specific importance. 
Today, the system connects us to history and architecture. We see these symbols on clock faces, tombstones, and old buildings. While they are no longer the standard for math, they remain a powerful way to express time and history. They turn a simple number into a symbol of the ancient world.
