These teeth are covered in hard enamel on the front surface. However, the back of the tooth is made of softer dentine. As the rodent gnaws, the softer dentine wears away much faster than the enamel. This process creates a sharp, chisel-like edge on the teeth. This constant wear is necessary to prevent the teeth from growing long enough to pierce the skull. Rodents typically have between 12 and 28 teeth in total. They lack canine teeth and possess a gap called a diastema between their incisors and cheek teeth.

Rodent anatomy is specialized for efficient feeding and movement. The masseter muscle is the primary muscle used for chewing. In many rodents, this muscle makes up 60% to 80% of the total muscle mass used for eating.

Different groups show different ways this system is organized. Sciuromorphous rodents, like eastern grey squirrels, have deep masseter muscles for powerful biting. Myomorphous rodents, such as the brown rat, have enlarged muscles that allow for both efficient gnawing and chewing. Hystricomorphous rodents, including guinea pigs, have larger superficial muscles. This setup may allow them to move their jaws further sideways when grinding food.

Rodents also possess various physical adaptations for survival. Many species have cheek pouches to store food for later use. In squirrels, these pouches are extensions of the mouth, while in gophers, they are separate structures.
