The job was a "book-keeper" on sugar plantations near Port Antonio, Jamaica. This role involved acting as an assistant overseer to Black slaves. Burns described this position as being "a poor Negro driver." He hoped the £30 annual salary would support a family. However, he never went to Jamaica because his poetry became successful.
