Historians debate the precise origin of the name Riga. One theory suggests it comes from Riege. This is the German name for the Rīdzene River. The Rīdzene was once a tributary of the Daugava. Bishop Albert suggested a different meaning. He claimed it came from the Latin word for "irrigated." He used this to symbolize the spread of Christianity. However, the most documented explanation comes from historian Dionysius Fabricius. In 1610, he stated the name came from many buildings. These were warehouses found along the banks of the Duna river. The Livs people called this river Riae.

The area has been a trade route since antiquity. The Daugava river was part of the Viking Dvina–Dnieper navigation route. This route led toward Byzantium. The site was settled by the Livs, a Finnic tribe. Early inhabitants focused on fishing and animal husbandry. They also engaged in trading and various crafts. These crafts included working with bone, wood, amber, and iron. By the 12th century, the Livonian Chronicle of Henry called it a trading center. The site held many dwellings and warehouses for storing flax and hides.

Riga was officially founded in 1201. This followed a period of religious and military change. German traders had established an outpost nearby in 1158. The monk Meinhard arrived to convert the local Livs to Christianity. He built a castle and church at Uexküll. Later, Bishop Albert arrived with 23 ships and 500 crusaders. He moved the seat of the Livonian bishopric to Riga in 1201. To protect trade, Albert established the Order of Livonian Brothers of the Sword in 1202. This order included nobles and merchants.
