Ribbon eels undergo a very interesting biological process as they grow. They are considered protandric hermaphrodites, which means they change sex during their lives. 
Even though their colors are so bright, these eels do not use color to find mates. This is because ribbon eels are colorblind. They possess only one of the two photoreceptor cells required to see colors. Instead of relying on color, they likely rely on other senses. Their physical structure also helps them navigate. They have expanded anterior nostrils and wide-open jaws. They are also diurnal, meaning they are active during the daytime rather than at night. In the wild, these eels can live for up to twenty years.

These eels live in many parts of the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean. Their range extends from East Africa all the way to southern Japan. They are also found in Australia and French Polynesia. Ribbon eels prefer shallower waters than many other moray species. They are typically found at depths between 1 and 57 meters. They like to live in sand burrows and coral reefs. To move through tight spaces in rubble or crevices, they use a protective slime coat. This allows them to slip through small openings easily.
