As a young man, he joined the German Navy in 1922.

His rise to power happened after he left the navy. He joined the Nazi Party and the SS in 1931. Heinrich Himmler hired him to build an intelligence service. His life ended during a mission called Operation Anthropoid. In May 1942, Czech and Slovak soldiers ambushed him in Prague. They were trained by the British Special Operations Executive. The attack left him mortally wounded. He died from sepsis on June 4, 1942. After his death, Nazi intelligence blamed local villages for the attack. They destroyed the villages of Lidice and Ležáky in response.

In January 1942, Heydrich chaired the Wannsee Conference. This meeting was used to formalize the "Final Solution to the Jewish question." This plan involved the mass deportation and murder of Jewish populations. Heydrich was also directly responsible for the Einsatzgruppen. These were special task forces that traveled behind German armies. They murdered more than two million people through mass shootings and gassing. This total included 1.3 million Jewish people.

Heydrich rose to power quickly within the SS intelligence service. Heinrich Himmler hired him to develop a new intelligence system. Heydrich created a vast network of spies and informers. He used this information to gather intelligence and for political blackmail. He kept detailed records on thousands of people using index cards. His income grew significantly as his influence increased. By 1938, his annual income had risen to 17,371 Reichsmarks.

His life ended as a result of Operation Anthropoid. On May 27, 1942, a team of Czech and Slovak soldiers ambushed him in Prague. These soldiers had been trained by the British Special Operations Executive. The ambush left Heydrich mortally wounded. He died from sepsis on June 4, 1942.

In response, Nazi intelligence falsely blamed local resistance for the attack. They destroyed the villages of Lidice and Ležáky. In Lidice, the men and boys aged 14 and older were shot. Most women and children were deported to concentration camps where they were murdered.
