People first used these in the year 1608. A man named Hans Lippershey tried to patent one. Later, Galileo Galilei made his own version. He used it to see moons around Jupiter. 
Early telescopes had some problems. They could make blurry images. To fix this, makers created achromatic lenses. These use two pieces of glass to bring colors into focus. Later, makers made apochromatic lenses. These use three pieces of glass. They make a very crisp image.
Large refractors were very popular in the 1800s. The Yerkes Observatory has a very large one.

A refracting telescope, also called a refractor or dioptric telescope, is an optical instrument that uses a lens to form an image. 

The mechanism of a refractor relies on the process of refraction, which is the bending of light. A refracting telescope typically consists of an objective lens at the front and an eyepiece at the rear. 
There are two primary historical designs for these telescopes: the Galilean and the Keplerian. The Galilean telescope, used by Galileo Galilei in 1609, uses a convergent objective lens and a divergent eyepiece lens. 

Early astronomers struggled with chromatic aberration, which is a distortion where colors do not focus at the same point. To solve this, Chester Moore Hall invented the achromatic lens in 1733. 
The 19th century was the era of the "great refractors." During this time, advancements in glass making allowed for much larger lenses. 
Many significant astronomical discoveries were made using refracting telescopes. For example, the planet Neptune and the moons of Mars were discovered using achromatic refractors. 
Despite their power, refracting telescopes face physical limitations. As lenses get larger, they suffer from "lens sagging," where gravity deforms the glass because it is only supported at the edges.
