Recife is a large and busy city in Brazil.

The way the city looks is shaped by its water and its name. The name Recife comes from the stone reefs found offshore. These reefs are not coral, but are actually very hard, ancient beaches.

Recife has a very old history that began in the 1500s. It was founded around 1537 during the early days of Portuguese colonization.

Today, Recife is a major center for many different types of work. It is a huge hub for business and industry in the Northeast. One special area is called Porto Digital, which started in July 2000.

Many people visit Recife to see its famous culture and sites. It is a very important place for tourism in Brazil. The city is home to the Federal University of Pernambuco.

Recife is a major coastal city in Brazil.
The city's layout is defined by water and islands. Recife is formed by three main islands: Recife, Santo Antônio, and Boa Vista. The Beberibe and Capibaribe rivers flow through these islands. These rivers eventually drain into the South Atlantic Ocean. Many smaller rivers, such as the Jiquiá and the Pina, also flow through the area. Because of these many waterways, the city has more than 50 bridges. These bridges link the many small islands together.
The name Recife refers to the offshore reefs. These are not coral reefs. Instead, they are consolidated ancient beaches that are as hard as stone. The climate is a tropical monsoon climate, known as Am in the Köppen classification. This means the weather is warm or hot with high humidity. Westwardly trade winds from the ocean help make the heat more pleasant. June is the wettest month, with an average of 350 mm of rain. November is the driest and sunniest month.
Recife has a long and complex history. It began as a small settlement of fishing shacks and warehouses. This happened between 1535 and 1537 during Portuguese colonization. The city was a key harbor for sugar cane production. In the 17th century, the Dutch West India Company took control.
Today, Recife is a massive economic and industrial hub. The Metropolitan Region is the main industrial zone for Pernambuco. Many companies produce motor vehicles, ships, and electronics. The city also produces sugar and ethanol from cane. A special area called Porto Digital was founded in July 2000.

Tourism is a vital part of the local culture. The city is famous for its beaches and historical sites. The beach of Porto de Galinhas is located south of the city. To the north lies the Historic Centre of Olinda. Olinda was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

While the city is a center for growth, it faces challenges. Recife has some of the highest rates of gun violence in Brazil. However, it is still considered the safest state capital in the Northeast. The city also has high rates of social inequality.
