Bourque's career was defined by incredible individual skill and statistical dominance. He won the James Norris Memorial Trophy, which honors the league's best defenseman, five times. He also finished second in the voting for this trophy six more times. Beyond defensive honors, he was a rare threat for the Hart Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the league's most valuable player. He finished as the runner-up for this award twice. Over his career, he was named to an All-Star team 19 times. This includes 13 selections to the First Team and six to the Second Team.

His professional journey began after a successful junior career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). During his time in Boston, he achieved several historic milestones. He broke Bobby Orr's Bruins record for career points by a defenseman. He also broke Orr's record for career goals by a defenseman. In February 1992, Bourque reached 1,000 career points. He was only the third defenseman in NHL history to reach this massive milestone.
