His engineering ideas remained influential for a long time. For example, Major William Green used these ideas in 1761 at Gibraltar.

The ravelin is a vital component of the broader bastion fortification system. It works in tandem with the curtain walls and bastions to create a layered defense. By forcing attackers to deal with the outwork first, the main fortress remains protected from direct artillery fire. This relationship between the outerwork and the innerwork defines the strength of the entire fortification. The transition from small bridge-protectors to massive earthen works shows how engineers adapted to the power of gunpowder and cannons.
